Makie Kuzuhara is a ghost in Fatal Frame III. She succumbed to the Tattooed Curse and became trapped in the Manor of Sleep with her daughter, Kozue.

Background

Makie lived in Myojin Village with her husband and daughter sometime in the Taisho era (1912-1926).[1] One day, Makie's husband suffered an accident while out playing with Kozue: trying to reach her ball, he fell and was killed.[2] Kozue was too frightened to tell her mother what had really happened, and although Makie guessed the truth, she tried to spare Kozue's feelings by pretending he was simply missing.[3] In the months after his death, Makie and Kozue would wander the mountains almost every day, searching for the man both knew to be dead.[4]

At some point, mother and daughter began suffering from the Tattooed Curse, and finally succumbed. A neighbour realized they hadn't been seen for several days, and went to check on them, but found only black, soot-like marks.

Fatal Frame III

Trapped in the Manor of Sleep, Makie continues the hopeless search for her husband, asking visitors to the manor whether they have seen him. Usually she and Kozue appear together, but during Hour III, Kozue hides alone to escape her mother's grief, and Rei can track their spirits around the Manor in the "Mother and Daughter" sidequest to obtain extra information about the two. When Rei photographs Makie during this time, the developed photo reveals Makie holding what appears to be an infant.
