The Abyss of the Horizon is a vast sea separating the land of the living and the land of the dead. It is located in the mountains behind the Kuze Shrine. It is here where the spirits of the dead cross over to the "Other World" or "Other Side," i.e. the afterlife.[1] [2] [3]
Also Known As
- Sea of Endless Night (常世海)[4]
- Final Shore
Notable Events
- Rei sends the bodies of Reika and Kaname by boat to the 'other side', thus enabling both of their spirits to rest in peace.
- Rei witnesses spirits crossing over to the other side, including Yuu. Yuu tells her to continue living on, before taking her tattoos and breaking the curse.
- Miku conceives her daughter, Miu, during a brief meeting with the dead.
Ghosts Encountered
- Yuu Asou - takes Rei's tattoos away from her.
Misc. Info
- The scene of lanterns floating on the Abyss of the Horizon is similar to toro-nagashi or 'lantern floating', which is done at the end of Obon. It is a way to send the visiting spirits back to the spirit world.
