Searching for the four Tattooed Stakes to subdue the priestess, Kei visits all four Doll Altars and completes four candle puzzles. When all four stakes are gathered, he makes his way once more to the Engraving Shrine, and through the doors at the back. He finds himself on a spiralling staircase leading deep underground, and must defeat Yashuu Kuze, who guards the doors to the innermost part of the shrine.
Kei makes his way to the Chamber of Thorns, in which he finds dozens of priestesses staked to the walls and floor. He identifies Reika Kuze, but discovers that her limbs are already staked down. He tries to flee, but before he can escape, the doors to the Chamber slam shut and he is trapped inside with the priestess.
Rei wakes to find that Kei has either vanished, leaving a black stain, or has fallen into a deep sleep (if the player has completed the Echo Stone Earring sidequest). Rei is now the only one who has not completely succumbed to the curse.
