Cutting Ritual
| ||||||||||||||||||
The Cutting Ritual is a small portion of the overall Hidden Ceremony, performed in Minakami Village. It is used to prepare a Kusabi. The thought behind the ritual is that the more the Kusabi is suffering, the greater calming effect they have in placating the Hellish Abyss. Kusabi must be alive after the ritual in order for the Hidden Ceremony to be successful. Those who cannot endure the pain are unsuitable to be sacrificed, and their bodies are left in a small cavern that runs alongside the Underground Passageway.[1]
Preparation
An Outsider is welcomed into the village, then held as a prisoner until the time of the Hidden Ceremony. At this time, they are escorted to the Rope Temple, where they are bound with ropes and suspended above the altar.
The Ritual
While the priests chant and the Ceremony Master presides over the ritual, the Veiled Priests cut and slash the victim from below with their staffs. Through their suffering, they are transformed into a Sokushinbutsu (即身仏).[2] The greater the pain of the victim, the more effective a sacrifice they are believed to make.[3][4]
Result
The Kusabi
A Kusabi is made for usage in the Hidden Ceremony.
Misc Info
- The first Cutting Ritual was performed by a Ceremony Master, who sliced himself up and threw himself into the Hellish Abyss to appease it. Since then, the Cutting Ritual has been part of the Hidden Ceremony.[3]
