The Cutting Ritual is a ritual carried out in order to prepare a Kusabi for sacrifice as part of the Hidden Ceremony of Minakami Village. Performed using Outsiders if the Hellish Abyss begins to rumble in between Crimson Sacrifice Rituals, it was originated by a Ceremony Master who sliced up his own body, after which it became part of the Hidden Ceremony.[1][2]
Preparation
An Outsider is welcomed into the village, then held as a prisoner until the time of the Hidden Ceremony. At this time, they are escorted to the Rope Temple, where they are bound with ropes and suspended above the altar.
The Ritual
The Ceremony Master presides over the ritual as the Veiled Priests chant. The victim is bound with ropes and the priests ritualistically cut their body. Through their suffering, they are transformed into a Sokushinbutsu (即身仏).[3] The greater the pain of the victim, the more effective a sacrifice they are believed to make.[1]
Result
The Kusabi
A Kusabi is made for usage in the Hidden Ceremony.
Failed Kusabi
Potential Kusabi who are unable to withstand the pain and die during the ritual are considered unsuitable sacrifices. Their bodies are enshrined in a small cavern that runs alongside the Underground Passageway.[4]
Misc. Info
- The Japanese word used to mean "cutting" is read misogi, a homophone of a form of Shinto ritualistic purification.[5]
