The Cell was a room in Kurosawa House of Minakami Village. It was used to imprison Outsiders who came to the village and were to be made into Kusabi. It was also used as a repository for books about the village and its rituals. Seijiro Makabe was imprisoned here before becoming a Kusabi, and used the books stored in the cell to continue his research. When it was not in use as a prison, Sae and Yae Kurosawa would use the cell as a secret place to talk,[1] and an extra ghost appearance is added in the final chapter of Deep Crimson Butterfly.
During Fatal Frame II, Mayu becomes trapped in the Cell, forcing Mio to leave her behind to search for the key. This causes Mayu's mental state to deteriorate even more rapidly. When Mio returns, she finds Mayu gone, and the words "run" and "are you leaving me again?" scratched into the wall.
