The Cell was a room in Kurosawa House of Minakami Village. It was used to imprison Outsiders who came to the village and were to be made into Kusabi. It was also used as a repository for books about the village and its rituals. Seijiro Makabe was imprisoned here before becoming a Kusabi, and used the books stored in the cell to continue his research. When it was not in use as a prison, Sae and Yae Kurosawa would use the cell as a secret place to talk, and an extra ghost appearance is added in the final chapter of Deep Crimson Butterfly.

During Fatal Frame II, Mayu becomes trapped in the Cell, forcing Mio to leave her behind to search for the key. This causes Mayu's mental state to deteriorate even more rapidly. When Mio returns, she finds Mayu gone, and the words "run" and "are you leaving me again?" scratched into the wall.

In Fatal Frame III, the Cell is one of the rooms that appears in Mio's dreams of the Manor of Sleep, and consequently in Kei's dreams as well. During Hour VIII, Mio is trapped inside the Cell, and Kei must retrieve the Sunlight Key and Shadow Key to free her. When he finally manages to unlock the door, Mio is gone, and the words "I'll be with you" (ずっといっしょだから) are carved into the wall, in the same place as Mayu carved her message in Fatal Frame II.
